MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION CHAIR

"TRIZ Class Report"

Section Members & Honored Eavesdroppers,

Before I start, we are past due for securing our slate of officers for next year.  We need candidates to fill the Chair position.  Please contact our chair if you can help or want to nominate someone else.  The new slate of officers begin their posts July 1, 2008.

Since TRIZ is becoming more of a quality discipline, I asked Kim Niles to report on a three day class he took at UCSD on the subject earlier this month.  Here's his report:

+~+~+

Our three day course was taught by Dr. Ellen Domb whose expertise is in structured creativity, called TRIZ.  She a guru on the subject and so managed to help us all master 8 of the 50 tools that were originally developed in Russia after studying millions of patents and realizing that there are the same patterns used over and over.

I could tell you a lot more but it sounds better coming from her so I invite you all to

listen to an approximately 15minute pod cast of her at http://delphigroup.blogs.com/dan_keldsen/2007/01/innovation_grow.html.

Ellen is the President of The PQR Group and a founding board member and Judge for the California Council on Quality and Service. She is a charter member of the Quality Function Deployment Institute, co-founder of The TRIZ Institute, and the founder and current editor of The TRIZ Journal, http://www.triz-journal.com

Her academic background ranges from Stanford University's Executive Management Program to a Ph.D. in physics from Temple University and a bachelor's degree from MIT.

If you are interested in taking a course from her, UCSD will be offering the same class again in November.  I recommend that anyone interested in becoming more creative, or in helping others become more creative attend her class.

Also don't miss the tool and article archives links below as well as the article we already have published on our site at http://www.asqsandiego.org/articles/triz.htm

One of the 50 tools of TRIZ is a contradiction matrix.  The link above takes you to www.triz40.com  which is a mechanized version of that matrix.  It works to create ideas for all types of Engineering, industries, service or mechanical types of situations as long as you keep your mind open regarding the answers it gives you.
