MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR  

 

"Two Big Projects"

 

In addition to all the normal projects our section puts on, such as on-going refresher courses, occasional workshops, strategic planning, etc., we currently have two big and unusual projects underway.  

 

Each project is run by a team composed of officers and members.  Here is the current status of those two projects:

  1. Project "Preventing the Next Firestorm".  We have met with the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services and have built a lot of momentum going forward.  We have room for more members to join this committee.  Please consider helping us out by contacting me directly.  

  2. Project "Teaming with National University".  Our next subteam meeting is next month.  Tuesday meeting's main speaker is Bill Barkau who works with National University.  He will have a team of four attending together as the speaking team including Bill.  Bill awarded Abe Wong with his Six Sigma Master Black Belt certificate during our March meeting as shown in the photo below.

Abstract

 

Presentation Synopsis: Is Six Sigma Just TQM Warmed Over?  

 

Despite its successes and track record, Six Sigma has come under attack as being Total Quality Management warmed over.  In his presentation, Bill examines the origins and developments of both TQM and Six Sigma in an attempt to resolve this issue.  After reviewing and explaining each, Bill will compare and contrast their principles and practices to reach his conclusion.

 

 

Biography

 

L. W. (Bill) Barkau, VSE Corp. Senior Associate Bill is a Senior Associate and designated Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt at the Management Sciences Division of VSE Corporation. He holds two undergraduate degrees and a Master of Science Degree in Systems Management from USC. His responsibilities include design, development, and delivery of Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt courses and specialty engineering applications. 

 

A recognized expert in data analysis and graphical representation of data for decision making, Bill has taught courses in bio-statistics and evidence-based medicine, and presently teaches courses in fact-based decision making for management and engineering. Bill's varied career has included positions in test engineering, systems engineering, reliability engineering, program and functional management, and adjunct professor at several major universities. 

 

He is currently working with the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Centers (ARDEC) to improve the reliability of new and fielded equipment as part of the Army's on-going Design for Lean Six Sigma program. He is also collaborating with National University in developing their Lean Six Sigma and Specialty Engineering programs.

 

 

Pre-clinic Information:

 

Kim will lead a group discussion on how we are and or should be implementing statistics at our companies using our Quality Management System and the STAT acronym.  

 

Kim Niles is a senior member of ASQ, has a Masters degree in Quality Science, and has ASQ CQE, CSSBB, and UCSD MBB certifications. Kim is an adjunct instructor through San Diego State University (SDSU) and University of California in San Diego (UCSD) extensions. He works for Alphatec Spine, Inc. in Carlsbad, CA.
