MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Pre-meeting clinic"

Many years ago we held two meetings in one.  We had a pre-meeting or technical clinic that usually was a discussion or technical presentation of some detailed aspect of a quality tool or method.  The clinic helped our members because it not only gives them more reason to attend meetings and participate as a member but those that attend also get more points toward maintaining their certifications.  After the pre-meeting we would eat dinner and then hold our main meeting.

This month we are planning to try that concept again with Ron Sedlock giving a short 15-20 minute pre-meeting explaining his article outlining his novel idea for audit planning that was published in this month's Quality Progress magazine.  You can download that article here (small pdf file; free reader link at the bottom of this page).

Let us know if you think this is a concept (pre-meetings) that we should continue and or what you think we might improve on to make it something we should continue.

Abstract

In this informative and entertaining presentation, Dr. Nelson Zagalsky, an Integral Coach and former corporate executive, shows how leaders can become as effective in dealing with management and leadership challenges at age thirty as they normally would only become at age fifty. His thesis is that a holistic behavioral coaching approach can achieve such turbocharged acceleration by removing the braking action of personality rooted problematic behaviors and the foundational competency gaps that one never quite got right in their first pass through Human Being 101. These include such competencies as emotional awareness and relational skills.

While technically trained leaders are stereotypically recognized to be especially deficient in these competency areas, the reality is that many trained in business or the liberal arts have similarly failed to completely master the content of Human Being 101. He believes that unless this is addressed in a proactive way as part of a leadership development program, before the weight of the executive’s management and leadership responsibilities start to overload their foundation, it often may need to be addressed later as part of a remedial coaching program. The success rate for such remedial coaching efforts is far less than coaching in advance of the need.

This engaging and interactive presentation will have the audience deeply engaged in looking at their Enneagram personality styles, reflecting on their possible stereotypical problematic behaviors, and learning about how those problematic behaviors and incomplete satisfaction of all of their Human Being 101 certificate requirements might slow development of effective leaders.

It will conclude with a coaching case study that includes a description of practices that the audience can self-apply to help deal with a very common leadership challenge; avoiding being overwhelmed by multiple stakeholder demands. The audience will also leave with the ability to identify coaching opportunities, and how they might include coaching as a component of their talent and leadership development process. They will also learn about a website where they can read about practices that are known to be helpful for advancing personal development within their particular personality style.
