MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Full Steam Ahead"

Dear Section 703 friends and co-members:

This calendar year is off to a fast start.   We've got so much on our plate that I'm concerned that our officers might need to slow down a bit or risk losing sight of what you  (our customers) really want out of your membership.   Therefore, we decided last night during our monthly board meeting to put together a yearly directional membership survey.  This survey will be an extra email sent to you later this month or next month.  Please do your best to help provide us with your direction with a quick response.

In the mean time, I'm cutting this message short in favor of bulleted information bits in an effort to focus on effectively communicating the most important information that you need to know as follows:
  • Please sign up now for this month's meeting.  Note that we just changed the location and pricing yesterday.  Those of you that have already pre-paid using your credit card will be reimbursed.  Those of you that have already RSVP'd will be contacted to confirm you understand the change.  See details below and on our meetings page.  RSVP using our form
  • We will be supporting Mathcounts again this year with a $250 donation to this noble community outreach program.  The grade school and middle school team math competition event is at Hewlett Packard on the 28th.  Volunteers are still needed.  See: http://www.mathcounts-ca.org/Chapters/SanDiego/sandiego.htm
  • We are joining forces with approximately 15 other local societies in supporting an outreach program called National Engineers Week later this month.  If you wish to attend the 200+ member banquet (see http://www.newsd.org/ ),  please RSVP by paying $37 by credit card and by leaving your email address.  Banquet Speaker: Dr. Nicolas Alexopoulos, Dean School of Engineering for University of California Irvine has a fascinating presentation about the genesis and destruction of the First Internet over 2200 years ago.  This presentation focuses on the historic events in the creation of Alexandria, the only seaport Egypt ever had. The evolution of Alexandria as the international city of the ancient world, as the first multilingual, multi-religious and multiethnic society will be discussed. The concept of Alexandria as an ancient and the first Internet, in the creation and accumulation of knowledge, and as the center of information processing and dissemination will be brought to light. Emphasis will be placed in the founding of the Library/Museum of Alexandria and its impact in the nourishing of some of the greatest minds of all time in literature, science, medicine and engineering. Major engineering accomplishments will be highlighted in terms to their applications today.  The lecture will end with a discussion of the events, which led to the destruction of the Library/Museum of Alexandria and the murder of Hypatia, the first known great woman philosopher/scientist/mathematician. It will be argued that these events played the key role to bring about the onset of the Dark Ages.   Banquet Site:  Doubletree Hotel, San Diego Mission Valley
  • No workshop for February due to this same NEW-SD event.
  • Thanks to you we will be holding two more courses ... the CQA and the CSQE both have enough student interest to go ahead with the classes.  Details will be provided during Stacy's next educational email on the 15th.
  • We have a new pay pal form button for those that want to pay for multiple guests using credit card.  Using the button will take you to the normal secured form but you will be asked to fill in the dollar amount.

See you soon.

Best regards,

Hank Posters

This Month's Section Meeting

Our January meeting went well with 82 people.  See details here.

Our February meeting will be as follows:

Change Management

Feb. 10, 2004

"Smooth Change – Oxymoron or

Achievable Goal?" by Tim Scudder - CEO and Vice-President of Personal Strengths Publishing, a global publisher of training and performance improvement tools.

NOTE: We're back at Gen-Probe.  Also note the low dinner price.

Abstract

Smooth Change – the two words don’t seem to go together.  Is smooth change really possible?  What can be done to decrease resistance to change and increase the chance of successfully implementing change efforts?  This session will examine the types of conflict that occur during change efforts and focus on the productive results of conflict when it is managed well.  Ideas will be introduced to help participants understand and manage their change efforts effectively.

Objectives or Benefits:

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. use the smooth change model to increase the probability of successful change

  2. explain how change often leads to conflict.

  3. approach conflict constructively to produce win-win situations.

  4. connect change efforts to individual values.

Classes to be Held This Month

At the beginning of every month we review the RSVP's for courses being offered up to that date to see which courses have reached a critical mass so to speak ... justifying that we hold them that month on the third week of that month.  This month the CQA and the CQSE have enough interest to be held ... specific details soon.  No other courses have reached critical mass this month.  However, more people are signing up (see our  Education page).

Keep signing up for any courses you'd like to take and we will keep adding more so that perhaps the class you want will be held next month.
