MESSAGE FROM THE WEB LIAISON

Happy New Year!

"New Year SLC Goals"

Many of you have received a Performance Review and have provided your management with a list of Goals for the upcoming year.  ASQ San Diego is your Personal Professional Resource for providing you with the skills and knowledge that YOU need to accomplish these goals. We do this by providing Workshops, Guest Speakers and Recertification classes.  By We, I mean YOUR SECTION LEADERSHIP COMMITTEE ( SLC).

In a few years the diversity of the San Diego business community has grown from a base of companies that support the Defense, Hospitality and Education industries to include the Bio Med, Sports Equipment, Convention Business and others.  ASQ San Diego needs to cater to the needs of all of our members no matter what type of business they are employed.  To do this our SLC must represent the growing diversity in the employment market. This where our members are directly involved in their destiny by choosing SLC team members to provide them with opportunities for career growth and skills enhancement. ASQ San Diego will be organizing Elections for Officers of the Section, who will act in the interests of its membership. Check our Web page frequently for information about the ELECTION of New Officers who will represent YOU on July 1 2006.

The SLC will submit a Slate of Candidates for YOU to consider and will also ask our Membership to submit Candidates of their choosing.  This can be accomplished by a minimum of 10 members of the San Diego Section submitting their own slate to me. Most likely these members will either work for the same company or a group of companies in the same industry. If your company is a Sustaining member of our section, they may encourage their employees to submit a list of Candidates.  I wish to assure our members that YOUR SLC wishes to hear from YOU to ensure that we continue to represent all of YOU.

This Month's Meeting

Our December meeting went well (see details here).  Our January meeting will be as follows:

Jan 10, 2006

"Pretend Lean vs. Real Lean Manufacturing – How To Tell The Difference"

Roger Olsen

roger@systemsquality.com

http://www.systemsquality.com/

Abstract

Lean Manufacturing is not new.  It is based on the Toyota Production System, which has been around for over 50 years. The world “discovered” Lean in the 1990’s book “Lean Thinking”.  Since then thousands of companies have implemented Lean and become significantly more competitive and more profitable.

Many other companies thought they implemented Lean and were disappointed in the results. The improvements were not large, or they did not last very long. These companies have typically discounted Lean as “just another fad”.

This presentation will look at the differences between those companies that got the results they hoped for, and those that were not as successful. The presentation will cover what it takes to transform to a lean organization where the results will last, and how to tell the difference between “Real” and “Pretend” Lean Manufacturing.
