MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Happy New Year"

What is it about the end of one year and the beginning of another that causes us to stop and take stock of what has passed and give thought to what we hope to accomplish in the year to come? Counting our blessings, reassessing the good decisions and the bad, like a good plan, we should not be considering these things once a year, rather we should be continuously mindful of these things. I too find myself reflecting on the pluses and minuses of the year past and considering new goals for the year to come. Part of that assessment causes me to stop and reflect on what it means to be a quality professional today. There have been many changes in our profession during my 20+ years so I stopped and gave thought to that question in an effort to define why it is important for me, and for you, to not only continue to participate in our honorable profession but to recharge our enthusiasm for our mission and to encourage others to join our cause.

We have seen over the last two decades the roll of quality being decentralized and integrated into everyone's job description. As a direct result, we have seen the quality organization within many businesses eliminated or greatly reduced. So what does it mean, in 2007, to be a quality professional and where is it that our profession is headed?

To me the answer comes easily. The quality professional is not someone who necessarily has the word 'quality' in their job title, although many still do. Rather, a quality professional is that individual who has made quality their professional mission, their prime personal objective. They see quality as the means to an end. To the quality professional, success and quality are inseparably linked. You may achieve some type of short term success without focusing entirely on quality, however, to persevere in business and to have the hope of a prosperous future, quality is essential to long term success. Quality gives integrity to products and services and hence creditability to the businesses and people that produce and provide them and that creditability is essential to success of any brand.

Quality professionals have many positive attributes and contribute significantly to the ultimate success of their organizations. They have a keen sense of identifying where waste can be eliminated and where performance can be improved. They are driven to make things better, to try new things, to motivate others and to do whatever it takes to continuously improve.

The quality professional is that person, or persons, within an organization that makes it their mission to see quality improve at every opportunity. The quality professional is that member of the team who never losses sight of the customer, who uses compromise only to improve quality, not to bargain it away. The quality professional is an advocate of doing things correctly, not just quickly, cheaply, my way or for the sake of political expediency.

In all my years in business I have seen many instances where a single quality professional made the difference between success and failure. I have seen many quality professionals deliver tremendous value to all stakeholders, and in so doing, perform a good and honorable service to society.

As we move forward into the new year, I ask you to reach out to those quality professionals in your organization and encourage them, support them, and if you are not already a quality professional, to become one. If you are a quality professional, continue your pursuit of making things better and remain a steady advocate of quality in your organization with a never ending focus upon your customers. Together we can have a tremendous impact upon our individual organizations and our community as a whole.

A Happy New Year and a Quality 2007 from ASQ Section 703 to all of you!

This Month's Meeting

Jan. 09, 2007 Review of latest book; software, hardware, and systems testing. Rex Black flying in from Texas for this event

Abstract

Review of latest book; software, hardware, and systems testing.

In his latest book, "Foundations of Software Testing", Rex Black and his
co-authors cover the entire length and breadth of the ISTQB Foundation
syllabus. In his presentation for us, Rex will focus on a portion of that
book's material. In his talk, he will cover seven fundamental testing
principles, illustrated with anecdotes, metrics, and analysis. Connecting
these fundamental principles with the real-world, the talk will be
practical and will include an action plan for applying the principle at
work, starting the very next day.
