MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Brett's 1st Message"

Special thanks and my sincerest appreciation to Doug McCloskey whom has unselfishly led the San Diego ASQ 703 chapter for the last few years. Doug has forged a new progressive vision for the Chapter leadership, and I can only hope to continue develop upon our charter.

My intention and vision for the next 2 years is to revitalize our current membership base and expand our Quality message to many new Quality Professionals throughout San Diego county. This will be accomplished by providing:

  • Great meetings (events people look forward to)

  • Great speakers (local, regional, national and internationally recognized - 4 X per year)

  • Great educational opportunities (classes/workshops/training that supports certification and supports soft & hard quality skills)

  • Great community involvement (strengthening the San Diego quality community)

  • Increasing awareness to corporate Quality leadership/champions

In order to achieve the ideals above, I wish to engage and empower all 703 family members (those currently active, the long-term dormant and the mildly interested) to tell a co-worker, Boss or VP about the advantages of ASQ membership and the benefits of the Quality education programs. If we can unleash the power of the (750) collective 703 Associates, I am confident we can be successful together.

The reason I accepted the Chair position is that with any sustained relationship there is a mutual Give & Take. I have Taken many of the educational courses offered through ASQ and have prospered professionally for it. Now I would like to Give back to the organization that has helped me grow.

"And you, the individual, must find new paths and constantly nourish your knowledge, breath of vision, willingness, enthusiasm, and reverence that will change the whole atmosphere of your mind, and make you receptive to a changing world"

Sogyal Rinpoche

Tibetan Spiritual Leader

Pre-meeting-clinic this month on "Creating Business Relationships that Get Results"; lead by Gregg Oliver

Abstract

As quality professionals why is it that we have to fight so hard to convince our organizations to adopt quality principles and practices? Might it be because in the appropriate priorities for our organizations quality is not placed in the top three?

This presentation frames quality improvement initiatives in terms of organizational strategy and explains where -- in different strategies -- quality ranks. It also presents how to re-frame quality in terms of what each strategy is trying to optimize. In the speaker's experience, this re-framing remarkably accelerates the adoption of quality initiatives.

Biography

Dr. Stan Rifkin is President of Master Systems Inc., an advisory services firm in its 23rd year. He is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt who focuses on knowledge work, primarily software management and development. He has been the associate editor in chief for the quality and management areas of IEEE Software magazine, was a founding member of the editorial board of Empirical Software Engineering, was a project leader at the Software Engineering Institute and on the Project Management Institute's Organizational Project Management Maturity Model, and is a founder and operates the San Diego Software Process Improvement Network.

Stan received his BS in business (quantitative methods), MS in engineering (computer science), and doctorate in executive leadership and organizational systems.

  • Modular Courses & Tech Clinics:  No modular courses currently scheduled in lieu of pre-meeting technical clinics.  15-30 min tech clinic speakers needed.  Can you share a model, method, or tool with us?  Perhaps a student paper or a case study from work?  Contact our Ed Chair or Programs Chair as applicable.
