MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"UT MBNQA Article"

Click here (805kb Pdf) to view a recent article concerning the MBNQA from the San Diego Union Tribune (Feb. 4, 2007).

This article appears to show declining support by very large companies for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award (MBNQA) ... which in turn creates less support at all levels.  This article reminds me of my concern for the state of our society in general. Although membership finally is showing an up tick, I'm not quite sure why that is when quality departments continue to appear to decline in size.

Over the past decade or so, we have seen the number of professionals with quality in their title decline, explaining this away by saying that quality is now everyone's job. At first I was in agreement with this change but as the years have passed I have become convinced that this is an error, that in reality, when management says quality is everyone's job and they don't need a quality professional to lead the quality program, they are in fact saying the quality is no ones job.  If that faulty logic were true, we would not need a HR department, since certainly all managers are responsible for developing and managing their teams. We are all supposed to be financially responsible, yet they still entrust the financial functions to professionals.

So I believe that what is most needed are those courageous individuals, quality men and women, who stand up and fight for what is right, in the customers best interest, and in so doing they will strengthen the companies they work for and add value for all stakeholders. Food for thought from Italy.

This Month's Meeting

June 12, 2007

"OEE Night with Two Speakers"

Frank Snook

& Kim Niles

Abstract

The quality professional is often placed on Lean and or Six Sigma projects where empowering the worker to improve quality involves some form of equipment maintenance.

This presentation will inform the attendee on different maintenance management ideas and how they interrelate. Topics covered will be PM (Preventive Maintenance), PdM (Predictive Maintenance), and TPM (definition varies by company but generally accepted as "Total Productive Maintenance"). It will also show how the Six Sigma tools, which are normally used on the production line, can be effectively implemented in the maintenance shop.

Our second speaker will either be Bob R ( BobRosinsky@hotmail. com ) to demo expensive OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) software used in the gaming industry or Kim Niles who will review the 6 forms of equipment waste and OEE metrics.
