MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Counting Down"

This month will be my last full month as Section Chair after two years in service.  A lot has happened in these two years which I plan to outline in next month's closing message.  I have enjoyed every minute of it.

You have elected our incoming Chair to be Brett Carter who you might remember from this photo.

Brett is a Director of Quality with Overland Storage and will be starting in his new position in July.

I still plan to remain active with the San Diego section while running the following two projects that I welcome your help with.

  • San Diego Office of Emergency Services

  • San Diego Quality Conference Projects

If you have not already volunteered and would like to do so, please let me know by emailing me at dm@grantrothbard.com

I have agreed on the next steps with the SDCOES and will be contacting those who have expressed interest to coordinate meetings and activities for this team.

This Month's Meeting

June 10, 2008

"Making Healthcare Better"

Bob Reary

President bob.reary@healthtoc.org 480-390-3726

Pre-meeting-clinic this month on "Changes in China affecting Quality"; lead by Abe Wong

Abstract

What if, in our healthcare organizations, we could dramatically improve the quality and timeliness of patient care, in the short-term, without heavy investments, without adding more resources, and without asking current staff to participate in yet another motivational program? Sound like an impossible dream? It has been done, and is currently being done, in hospitals around the world.

Hospitals and other healthcare provider organizations are achieving dramatic reduction in ER wait times, improved quality of patient care, shorter length-of-stay, and increased patient "throughput" (and increased revenue) in acute care and operating theaters, all without adding more beds or staff, and without asking staff to work harder. And it is not necessary to add more sophisticated computer systems either! How then is it being accomplished? By applying the principles and practices that are drawn from a body of knowledge known as "Theory-of-Constraints" (TOC).

TOC is an evidence-based approach that does not interfere with clinical practice, but seeks to remove delays and attack the core problems that currently impede the effective use of the capacity and resources we already have. In this session we will describe major problem scenarios that exist in today's healthcare environments, and point toward a practical, feasible way out that will help make our patients and organizations better, sooner, and in a sustained way.

Biography

Bob Reary is President of non-profit HealthTOC, and has over 25 years of experience in operations, process and performance improvement in life sciences and other industries.

He specializes in increasing operational throughput (patient flow and revenue) and quality with low or no additional operating expense or investment.

Bob is a practitioner of the Toyota Production System and the application of lean manufacturing practices in service and production environments. Applying expertise learned from the manufacturing sector, he is a past member of the Supply Chain Council's SCORboard, and the Board of Directors of the Stanford Supply Chain Forum.

Bob is trained as a Jonah in Theory-of-Constraints by the Goldratt Institute, has a certificate in Demand Flow Technology from the John Costanza Institute of Technology, and achieved his Fellow-level certification with the American Production and Inventory Control Society.
