    This Month's Meeting

Our May meeting went well (see details here).  Our June meeting will be as follows:

    June 9, 2009

    Topic

"Delivering Value to the Business through IT Services"

Brian Flora, Creative Enterprise Solutions LLC

    brian.flora@ceslearning.com  480-570-3105

30 min. pre-meeting-clinic this month on "How to Succeed in Quality: Part 2"; lead by Kim Niles

    Brian Flora

    Abstract

ITIL stands for the "Information Technology Infrastructure Library," a set of volumes originally compiled in Great Britain in the 1980's describing Best Practices for IT. Now in its third iteration (v3), ITIL focuses on IT as an organization built around provision of "services" rather than technologies. The focus on the design, development, deployment, support, and ongoing improvement of IT services based on business needs strikes at the very heart of ITIL, and at the core responsibilities within IT as a profession.

    Key Objectives:

    • Gain an understanding of the content and origins of ITIL

    • Learn about IT Service Management as a philosophy

    • Discuss the need to balance competing (and often opposing) objectives

    • Review the IT Service Lifecycle as it relates to the development, deployment, and ongoing support of IT Services

    • Learn to drive business innovation through organizational learning

    About Our Speaker

Brian Flora is a results-oriented Information Technology professional with over 12 years experience in driving technology solutions to business, financial, and logistical issues within rapidly changing environments. He is experienced in Business Continuity Planning with an emphasis on Enterprise Storage and Internet technologies.

Brian writes regular contributions for CIO.com, and is founding member of the IIBA chapter in San Diego, where he currently serves as VP of Professional Development. He attended the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and is a certified ITIL Expert, ITIL Service Manager, and ISEB accredited Master ITSM Instructor.

    Pre-Clinic

This month for our pre-clinic, Kim Niles (ASQ Officer & Fellow, MSQA, CSQE, CQE) will review 30minutes of job justification models in his pre-clinic series on "How to Succeed in Quality".  All of the following models were developed by Kim while writing a book by the same title due for publication later this year.  Nominal group techniques (NGT) will be used in related group exercises during this pre-clinic:

    1. Candidate Selection Pugh Matrix Pentagon:  Five metrics commonly used to facilitate judging your fit in the organization.

    2. Job Justification Triangle:   You may be the most qualified person for the job and still lose or not get hired for it due to any one of these three major reasons.  Every position has a different mix of these justification reasons.

    3. The XEAM Model:  Ways of looking at the various types of needs others have of you at work or home.  Those above you, below you, and beside you all have different expectations of you.     We covered this during our May meeting, prioritized this list, and brainstormed how to be successful in Quality.  This month we will review the results and brainstorm another related question using NGT.

    4. The AAMO Barrier Breaking Model:  Ways of determining the root cause of human situation related barriers in order to break through them.

    5. The Quality Professional Roles & Strengths Model:  While various psychological tests exist for how we all think (4 - 34 different types of thinking depending upon the test), some ways of thinking have shown to benefit quality professionals better than others due to the types of roles we play.  This model attempts to model those connections.
