MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Final Message"

Just over 3 years ago, I contacted the Chair of ASQ San Diego Section and asked him if there was any way that I could contribute to the section.  He invited me to take over the Membership Committee because the then current Committee Chair was having difficulty in balancing demands on her time.  I was able to fill that position for 3 years and gained much satisfaction in getting to know fellow professionals better.  Last year I ran for ASQ Section Vice Chair and passed the Membership responsibility to Glen Hanington.

Early this year I found that my working schedule had increased to the point where I could not be sure of being able to attend each section meeting.  I also found that I was unable to respond promptly to my emails and thus was unable to continue to provide the leadership that our members deserve.  I submitted my resignation a few days ago and was delighted when Doug McCloskey our Vice Chair agreed to assume my responsibilities through to the end of our fiscal year June 30.

Doug has asked me to remain on the Section Leadership Committee and help him as he takes over the reins.  I am very happy to do so and ask all of our Section members to support Doug and the other members of our SLC.

ASQ San Diego is YOUR Section.  It is not run by the government or by your employers.  It is run by members of YOUR Section who donate their professional skills towards enriching the work experience of its members.  If you would like to have a role in your career development, please do not hesitate to ask Doug McCloskey or Emelito Ong how YOU can contribute.

Thank you for all your support and understanding.  See you at our special membership meeting one week early ... on the 7th as outlined below.

Abstract

Currently in the US presenting a paper on INTEGRATED MODEL FOR BUSINESS EXCELLENCE in Los Angeles at the ASQ Management Conference.

Organizations worldwide have realized that it is high time emphasis is given on Quality and Customer Satisfaction. Due to intense competition, everywhere we see cost cutting, reduced time to market and varied designs with more and more features etc.

There are many existing initiatives like Total Quality Management, Total Productive Maintenance, ISO, Business Process Re-engineering, Six Sigma, Lean, Balanced Score Card, World Class Manufacturing etc. being used. Project Management, which is management of personnel, resources, time, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders, is another major issue that needs to be addressed adequately and simultaneously along with quality improvement initiatives.

Just as we get our body parameters checked from time to time in order to remain fit, Organizations need to keep a check on the “Critical Business Parameters” from time to time / identify better reflectors and maintain them as desired to ensure business stability and growth. Author suggests use of his integrated model in addressing the Critical Business Issues.

Six Sigma and Lean are practiced as methodologies of process improvement to achieve business excellence. Six Sigma is a systematic method of using extremely rigorous data gathering and statistical analysis primarily focusing on reducing variation. It also helps in developing corporate strategy and bringing about organizational change by aligning people and processes. Lean thinking in terms of better inputs, design, execution, control etc., without sacrificing on the intent acts as catalyst.

Six Sigma (Statistical Thinking) and Lean (Innovative thinking) when used in conjunction with Project Management can be recognized as panacea for all ailments! This author, based on his vast and diversified research and consulting experience has evolved a ‘Model’ integrating Six Sigma, Lean and Project Management that will be able to address the Critical Business Issues (both efficiency and effectiveness issues). The presentation highlights this new ‘Integrated Model’ to achieve business excellence.
