MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Stephen Orestano"

On April 4, 2005 we lost a long-standing member, Stephen Orestano who had been a member with ASQ since 1962.  He passed away at the ripe age of 83.

This month I got an email from his son who asked that we remove him from our database.  We update our database from National ASQ every month so we figure that if Stephen can pull this off from the grave for two whole years, he deserves special recognition, even if it is late.  Send me a note if you have any stories you can share about him.

Thank you Stephen for making us aware that we join ASQ for many reasons, one being social.  I've asked our webmaster to begin an obituary page so that we can honor your legacy as well as others that will follow you.

Stephen Orestano Born March 25, 1922 (New York) Died April 4, 2005 (San Diego) Stephen Orestano of San Diego, passed away April 4, 2005 at the age of 83. Survived by his 4 sons, 1 daughter and 4 grandchildren. Steve served four years in the United States Coast Guard in the South Pacific during World War II. Steve is buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego County, California alongside his loving wife, Mary Jo Orestano.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Stephen L. Starling

Chief Executive Officer

Roadmaps InstituteTM

As the CEO of the Roadmaps InstituteTM, Dr. Starling helps corporations measure and close gaps between current state and world-class best practices. Using a methodology developed by Dr. Starling called DR2IVETM (Developing Robust Roadmaps Integrating Value Enterprises), firms are able to quickly measure their gaps and develop strategic plans (Robust RoadmapsTM) to close the gaps.  Certification programs, software programs, and a variety of publications have been developed by Dr. Starling to facilitate the Roadmaps InstituteTM.

Dr. Starling earned his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in Operations Management with a minor in Artificial Intelligence.  He also earned a MBA from Northern Arizona University and a B.S. in Operations Management from Arizona State University.

Dr. Starling recently left academia after a fifteen year career as a professor. During his career in academia, Dr. Starling taught at the University of San Diego, California State University – East Bay, University of Pittsburgh, and Northern Arizona University.  Dr. Starling helped develop seven academic programs in San Diego, San Francisco (area), Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore.  The fondest memory from his career in academia was being voted by students as the top professor in Supply Chain Management seven out of his last eight years.  The love for teaching continues to this day, but Dr. Starling reserves his instruction for executives in industry.
