MESSAGE
FROM THE EDUCATION CHAIR
Dear ASQ Members: |
 |
|
In the few months I've been leading the Educational Committee for San Diego Section 0703, I noticed a decline in Refresher Course requests. Is everyone in the Quality Profession up to date with quality certifications? Are company budgets cutting back on employee training? Are you all going to another organization for training needs? These are things we would like to know.
Please submit your educational comments or requests using either our education query form or our general feedback form. Less than a dozen have been received this past quarter so perhaps this isn't the best forum to solicit our member's educational needs. Please don't hesitate to contact me personally at sapostol@cisco.com to learn more about the refresher course program.
We offer instructor based training at a very reasonable cost. It has been said that those students who take the refresher course have a higher pass rate than those who take the exam without prior preparation. After the new year, we are offering the Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) and Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE) refesher course to prepare for the June, 2003 exams.
Keep your eyes on the website for course schedule, starting date and time. We hope to see you there.

|
Sincerely,
Stacy Apostol
Education Committee Chair

"Organizational Cultures - American versus European business cultures"
By Hank Posters, Member and Officer
Abstract
Culture is defined by Edgar H. Schein (1)
as "a pattern of basic assumptions -- invented, discovered, or developed by a given group as it learns to cope with its problems of external adaptation and internal integration." This pattern of basic assumptions has worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore, is to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those adaptation and integration problems. Read on to review dynamics, consequences, and benefits of culture within companies.

"To Use a Mean or Individuals Control Chart "
By John J. Flaig, Ph.D. - July 2002 Speaker
Abstract
To plot individual data or to group the data and plot the mean on a control chart, that is the question. Several authors (not including Shakespeare) have weighed in on this issue and I want to present their arguments and then my own.

"Evaluating Job Opportunities
with the Decision Matrix"
By George Colberg
Abstract
Evaluating job opportunities can be a complex, stressful process. By looking at your professional and personal goals and using a Decision Matrix to rank each opportunity based on what's most important to you, the process can be logical and simplified. Job decisions are never easy. However, this process will help you to confidently sort through all the possibilities and make the right choice.
