MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Time for Change"

About this time of year I get a feeling it's time for change.  The time change is disorienting.  The warm weather is disorienting.  The massive amount of work we get prior to the holidays is disorienting.

Ric Van Der Linden told us a couple months ago that change requires vision, skills, incentive, resources, and direction.  If vision isn't present we get confusion.  If skills aren't present we get anxiety.  If incentive isn't present we get delays.  If resources aren't present we get frustrated.  If direction isn't present we get false starts.

Perhaps it's because of the warm weather, or the time change, or the fact that it's been almost a year since our new year's resolution / vision ... I'm not sure.  Either way, it's time for change.  Let's create that change by attending this month's meeting.  Just think, if we all attend and bring a friend or two we could have a couple thousand people turn up instead of the regular 50 or so.  Something to think about.

See you Tuesday (11/14).  Our meeting is still on the second Tuesday but that Tuesday is a bit later in the month.  This month's topic will be one most of use don't know much about yet it directly effects most of us and will indirectly affect all of us as quality professionals.

Workshop Status

Last month's DOE workshop went well.  We had 12 people and managed to review all basic experimental design principles, a case study, and perform a catapult experiment in just two hours.

The prior month resulted in a similar workshop on basic statistics.  Great job Kim and Jenny for pulling off two months of workshops.

Our next workshop wont be until January due to Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.  The default topic will be MSA and Gage R&R but we are working to develop other interesting topics and speakers as well.

Abstract

The increasing globalization of electronics manufacturing and obsolescence due to faster innovation of electronics products has raised their impact on the environment.  Most of the electrical and electronic devices are subject to RoHS and WEEE directives.  These two directives originated from the European Union but in a very short time are becoming International directives.

This presentation will cover related EU country specific requirements; understand how your products are likely to be impacted and nuts and bolts of complying with the RoHS and WEEE directive.  Based on personal experience with the directive, common pitfalls and best practices will be offered.
