MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"More on Firestorm 2007"

To all members of our section

As San Diegans were are all fire veterans, yet the recent fires surprised many of us. The combination of extremely dry conditions and very high Santa Ana winds were a fatal combination. To the credit of our great city, many were able to get good information and to evacuate in time. We have received a great deal of support from around the country, yet for some, our friends, neighbors and colleagues, that was not good enough.  If you are a member of our section and you have lost your job, lost your home, if you were displaced, put out of work for a significant amount of time or if you were harmed in any significant way by this event, I would like you to let us know.

I have stated as long as I have been chair, quite emphatically, that we exist for the primary benefit of our members, in my thinking this priority exceeds all others of our section; we are truly customer first here and you are our customer, our neighbor, our college and our friend. So in keeping with this commitment we want to help those who need our help.

Recently I have spoken with our national management at ASQ who likewise have expressed concern in our situation and have offered to help us help you.

So please, take a moment and let me know, let your board of directors know, how you came through this recent series of events.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. On behalf of the board and the section, we have you in our thoughts and look forward to hearing from you and seeing you again very soon. Maybe once we get passed the repair and recovery, we can hold a special monthly meeting to discuss the impact of these events on quality, risk, business continuity, disaster recovery and other topics within the scope of our profession.

I look forward to hearing from you very soon.

This Month's Meeting

"Our Road to Winning the 2006 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award"

Marci Jackson

Pre-meeting-clinic this month on sample size determination; coordinated by Kim Niles

Abstract

Quality organizations produce quality products. In the case of Premier, Inc. and Society for Health Systems, the product is quality health care and the results have included winning the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award last year (2006).

Our presenter, Marci Jackson, will focus her chapter meeting presentation on the pieces that create the "Quality Puzzle".  She will start with the edges of the puzzle which in part include the role of Quality Professionals within heath care facilities.  A more interior, but crucial puzzle piece is knowledge collections, transfer, and the quest to do things smarter and faster.

Marci’s responsibilities at Premier include management of an innovative knowledge transfer Portal. When the pieces come together, the entire puzzle represents a true quality organization.  A brief discussion of Premier’s journey will complete her presentation.
