MESSAGE FROM THE SECTION CHAIR

Greetings!

October 27, 2002

I hope you all had a great Columbus day! We have a great World Series coming up on the 18th with two Californian teams and the Chargers are 5-1. These events and the people involved are excellent illustrations of what can be accomplished when you prepare, study, train, surround yourself with other team members united in the same goals, have a plan and persist in achieving your shared vision. You can reap the rewards your hard work has earned you if you dare to be your best!

Statistics for Quality Engineering: DOE and Other Techniques 3-Hour Workshop

Many folks came out September 25th for Dr. Leonard Perry’s presentation on Statistics - Design of Experiment and learned about the steps necessary to achieve results using his well illustrated and explained examples. The discussions were very good with individuals raising questions on this subject from their respective business experiences. We were also provided with worksheets to aid in our implementation and offered support from our peers.

Internal Auditing Techniques 3-Hour Workshop

Diane Geldreich, who is an ASQ/IRC/RAB certified Quality Auditor with experience in ISO 9000 quality system development and administration for the electronics and telecommunication industries is presenting this in-depth workshop on October23rd. She will be covering good auditor characteristics, as well as good communication practices, audit types, principles and practices of effective auditing. The emphasis will be on demonstrating techniques involved in audit planning, execution, reporting and follow-up. Attendees will participate in a mock audit to apply learned concepts. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of mock audit results and lessons learned.

Be sure to check the website (3-Hour Workshop page). There will be no Nov./Dec. Workshops due to the Holidays!

Fees Increase

We have been asked by Catering By Design to pay a substantial increase in fees to hold our events there. After considerable discussion and consideration of other Sections practices, the Executives Board’s consensus was that the following increases must be made to remain financially solvent.

1.       The Section Meetings will be increased to $15 for Members with reservations and $18 for Non-Members/ No-Reservation Members.

2.       The 3-Hour Workshops be increased to $50 for Members with reservations and $60 for Non-Members/ No-Reservation Members.

Please send me your Refresher Course preferences considering the following questions.  We will finalize the Refresher Course fee increases based on your responses at the next Board Meeting. The increase depends on your feedback as to:

a.       Do you support the holding of all future Refresher Courses at the Ericsson Facility to offer a consistent facility location and eliminate the search for host companies?

b.      Do you support the addition of a meal and refreshments to the Refresher Courses like those offered to the 3-Hour Workshop attendees as a convenience to aid the students?

I encourage you to let your voice be heard and email your preferences today!

Please consider coming to our 3-Hour Workshops, later this month, you can reap the rewards by coming to this valuable training opportunity and networking with our fellow quality professionals united in achieving our shared vision: Daring to be our best!

Best regards,

Don Griego

MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION CHAIR

Dear ASQ Members:

We convened the Multi-Sectional Education Committee on Wednesday the 16th comprised of Hank Posters, Karen Liu, Gregg Oliver, Rich Ostrin, Harry Cullen, Dave Clinard and I joined by our guests including John Baeyertz, Section Chair and Dan Mueller, Education Chair, representing Palomar, Section 0708 and Linda Garriz Education Chair for Orange Empire, Section 0701.

This meeting covered many issues and is significant for the continued cooperation between our Section and the Palomar Section and assistance of the Orange Empire Section to help us benchmark the Education programs. After considerable discussion and consideration of other Sections practices, the consensus was that the following changes would be beneficial to the Section and the students Educational experience:

1.       The Refresher Course lengths are too long. The following changes were recommended:

a.       CQE and CRE shortened from 22 + Weeks to 15-18 weeks

b.      CQM and CSQE shortened from 22 + Weeks to 13-15 weeks

c.       CQA, CQT and CMI will remain at 10 –12 weeks

2.       The required texts will be the Indiana Quality Council Course Primers with all other texts recommended with the following exceptions:

a.       CQE – CQE Handbook

b.      CQM – CQM Handbook and Total Quality Control

3.       The addition of a Refresher/Workshop Course Evaluation form to focus on the student’s expectations, gather information on the effectiveness of the courses and performance of our instructors.

4.       The addition of a Refresher Course Certification to issue a record of accomplishment to the student.

5.       Course Fees will be increased to be competitive with pricing based on course offerings within the region.

Sincerely,

Stacy Apostol

Education Committee Chair

"Ten Responsibilities Leaders Cannot Delegate

By Frode L. Ødegård - of Ødegård Labs

Abstract

When discussing leadership effectiveness, we often stress the importance of delegation.  Yet, there are some things leaders cannot delegate to others.  They can certainly get assistance, coaching, training and encouragement. But some things are so essential that at the end of the day, the leader has to take personal responsibility for getting it right.  Without claiming it to be an exhaustive list, in this essay we look at ten essential responsibilities of a leader.  They are: charting a course, enticing others to come on board, enabling people to do their jobs well, holding people accountable, taking talent seriously, making sure all the pieces fit, emphasizing continuous learning, making sure their own time is well spent, being reality-oriented, and focusing on the future.  WORD or PDF formats available
