FROM THE CHAIR
|
Greetings Quality Professionals!
|

|
With the economy at a low, many of us are either worried about their job
situation or know someone who is out of work, so now is a good time to focus
on helping each other keep our skill sets sharp.
Therefore, now is the time to get the most out of your membership. Please get involved in either or all of the following aspects our section provides:
-
Networking - by attending workshops and meetings.... or send us other networking ideas for us to implement using our feedback form.
-
Socializing - by attending our social events, workshops and meetings ... or send us other social ideas for us to implement using our feedback form.
-
Education - We've got workshops, refresher courses (5 currently in progress), regular meeting educational topics, sponsored educational events, and a rather extensive library that was just highlighted by Quality Progress magazine (see our home page announcement). We think there is something for every quality professional need but if not then let us know using our feedback form.
-
Job Hunting - Our jobs page not only includes positions available but it also includes a page of unemployed member profiles, links to member company HR pages, and links to other professional job boards. If you know if a related resource that is missing then please let us know using our feedback form.
-
Benchmarking our Peers - If you can't find at least several of your co-members with the same title as you to benchmark then you are not trying. See a list of member job titles on our membership page.
See you during our regular meeting on the 8th. See details below.

THIS
MONTH'S MEETING
Our October meeting will be held on Tuesday Oct. 8, 2002.

Your Engineering, Product Marketing, and Web Apps teams have finally delivered versions of your product in French, Spanish, and Japanese. Are you ready to test them? How will you do it? What will you need and how will you set it up?
The good news is that you and your QA team really can do what it takes to sign off on versions of your software that have been "localized" or modified to meet the needs (language of UI, settings, configuration) of users in other locales. In this presentation you'll learn some rules of thumb for building test benches on which to run the products. You'll also see the kind of tools (software, hardware, plans) you'll need in your lab, whether you need to do this once in your career or once every three months.
Topics we'll cover:
-
The difference between functional and linguistic QA
-
What goes into the localization test plan
-
Expertise you'll need and don't realize you already have
-
Expertise you'll need and probably don't have, and how to get it
-
Different multilingual test bench configurations, and how to choose among them
-
What to do with bugs you find in the localized products
About our speaker
John White of 1-for-All Marketing http://www.1-for-all.com helps companies like HNC Software, Qualcomm, Peregrine Remedy and Skydesk market overseas versions of their products through internationalization, localization, and worldwide product marketing. He has conducted presentations and training on international products in many ways and to many audiences since the late 13th century, helping Marco Polo adapt Asian pasta for the Venice market, for instance. He is constantly testing localized versions of his clients software, and enjoying it immensely.
