MESSAGE FROM THE EDUCATION CHAIR

"Last Minute Advise"

Section Members & Honored Eavesdroppers,

Last Minute Test Advise

This coming Saturday is a special day for all of you preparing to take either the CQT, CRE, CMI, CQM, CSSBB, CHA-HACCP, or the CBA certification exam.  Good luck and remember to remove the colored pages from your primers.

Other advise comes from one of our members Patricia La Londe who with John Moran wrote an article published in Quality Progress magazine (April 2000) that gives test taking advice as follows:

Test takers are also advised to keep in mind these general
pointers about standardized exams:

  • Read all of the questions on the first page of the test so you realize that you do know the material. In other words, relax.

  • Read each question thoroughly. Don’t assume you know what’s being asked.

  • Eliminate implausible answers and move quickly past the obviously wrong choices.

  • Keep in mind that an answer may be a correct statement in itself but may not answer the question. Two answers may say exactly the opposite or be very similar.  Read them again to decide what makes one correct and the other wrong.

  • Answer every question. There is no penalty for guessing, and you have a 25% chance of getting it right.

  • Go through and answer the questions you know. Then go through and read the ones you’re unsure of. Mark those you are still not uncomfortable with. You will narrow the field down to just a few questions you will need to spend more time on. These are the questions you might want to use your reference books for.

  • Be aware of the time available for the exam and the remaining time as you work through the exam.

Educational Celebration (Pizza Party)

Earlier this month many of you helped celebrate new certified members.  It's hard to see from this photo collage but there were 53 of us chowing down on Fillipi's famous pizza in Kearny Mesa.

More information is posted at  http://www.asqsandiego.org/news/oct05mtgmail.htm#tmm

Current Educational Status

The CQT, and the CSQE refresher courses are well underway with lots of students ... but there's always room for more.  Contact me if you are interested in crashing a course mid-way through or if you want to express an educational need.

Quality Oriented Salaries

I've had a few people ask me lately how much having ASQ certifications can help with their personal salary.  ASQ posts yearly salary surveys at http://www.asq.org/pub/qualityprogress/salary_survey/index.html but you need to be a member to review them.

One can see that there is a big advantage to becoming certified!!

The Quality Technology Corner

Variation Types

by John J. Flaig, Ph.D.

There seems to be some confusion with regard to the classification of the causes of variation. For example, some people believe that points outside the control limits of an SPC chart are the always the result of special causes and those inside are the result of common causes.  Others believe that control limits should always be set at three standard deviations. Both beliefs are incorrect.

Make sure you visit our virtual Library, open 24 Hrs/day, 7days a week, and please bounce back your favorite Quality related library thoughts and submissions (i.e. comments, e-book links, old term papers, article links, articles you've written, etc.).
