MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"New Orleans Tragedy"

Greetings!

The tragedy in New Orleans will likely end up being the worst tragedy in US history.  The numbers affected are truly mind boggling.  A whole city was basically destroyed.  People are now dieing from exposure to the horrible conditions in the city.

Who is responsible for governmental Quality?  Quality obviously broke down at the state and national levels as simulations were run prior to hurricane Katrina that predicted the current situation and yet nothing was done about it.  Risk assessment and mitigation is a big part of Quality.  In this case the assessment part was correct.

Hank picked the story below off the internet and wants me to make it perfectly clear that I'm including it in this month's message not to make light of the New Orleans tragedy.  I'm including it in order to contrast my point that we humans need to rise up and proliferate quality by helping in some way to alleviate the pain and suffering of the victims and to mitigate other risks that surround us.  It's our responsibility to make a difference ... to be that SOMEBODY.

Who is responsible for Quality?

A company was facing quality problems in its products and customer services.
The CEO of the company made it very clear that the way things were done
had to change. Improving the quality of the company’s products and services
was an important job, he said, and asked EVERY employee to get involved in
making it happen.

After listening to the boss, EVERY employee was sure that SOMEBODY would do
it.  ANYBODY could have stepped up to the plate and do it, but NOBODY did. SOMEBODY got really mad about that because it was EVERYBODY’S job after all. EVERYBODY thought ANYBODY could do it, but NOBODY realized that, as usual, EVERYBODY wouldn’t do it.
The quality improvement drive ended up that EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY when
NOBODY did what ANYBODY could have done.

Moral of the story: as a Quality Professional, become SOMEBODY and get the
quality job done…
