MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

"Space Station Assembly"

Many Quality oriented gurus say that communication is a key, if not the key aspect of creating and maintaining quality products and services at all levels (strategic to tactical).  Along these lines, we all suffer with difficult communication issues from time to time.  Therefore, when I saw this great pictorial video explaining in simple terms, everything we'd want to know about the international space station, I thought I'd share it with you.

This Month's Meeting

Our August meeting went well (see details here).  Our September meeting will be as follows:

Sep. 8, 2009

Topic:

"Lean Product Development: Getting it Right the First Time… and in Half the Time!"

Keith Boyle, PE, MBA, CIRM, ASQ Certified Six-Sigma Black-Black, Certified Six-Sigma Master Black-Belt and Lean Sensei

kboyle@qprs.com

http://www.qprs.com

30 min. pre-meeting-clinic this month on "How to Succeed in Quality: Part 4"; led by Kim Niles

Abstract

80 percent of the issues we strive fix in operations are created during the product development process. This by itself is not good, and then given that the product is often late to the marketplace, incomplete and/or doesn’t perform to customer expectations the result is often horrendous.

Whether we are developing aerospace equipment, telecom devices, medical equipment, software systems, or healthcare processes, the failure modes are pretty much the same. This presentation will share how some companies apply several of the lean tools to the product development process to dramatically improve their quality and productivity in developing new products and processes. The approach and results from local San Diego companies will be shared along with case studies of critical success factors.

Presentation Outline:

  • Product Development - Why is this Any Different?

  • Current Opportunities

  • The Need to Do Things Differently

  • How to Apply the Lean Tools

  • Expected Results

  • Critical Success Factors
